Bob’s Artist Statement for the Show

There are photographs of the ocean, there are images of nature, and there are pictures of real life, but when I consider the numerous opportunities available to a photographer, I am eternally drawn to the dark side of the day.

This constant fascination arouses the passion within me to venture out after dark, late in the evening, to examine the depth and diversity of each night’s beauty. The night’s drama and eeriness draws me in for further inspection, what I discover evokes expressions of awe and wonderment. The raw beauty of the evening is in itself an experience.

Captivated by the dark side of the day I spend many sleepiness nights behind a camera lens. I am familiar with the many unique treasures hidden from view.  The artistic process isn’t all done at night. During the daylight hours, I scout possible locations. Later I spend hours editing the countless images that spill onto the computer screen after an evening photography session. Taking pictures is satisfying and fun, but I believe the artistic endeavors lie in the post processing at the computer.

At the computer is where I paint and sculpt artistic images using a mouse and Photoshop. While producing my art, I try to create an image that will evoke a strong emotion from the viewer. It is something I have simplified and narrowed down to as a “WOW.”

Panama Canal Expansion Construction

March 25, 2014 By Bob Chilton

Building the Third Panama CanalIn February, Missy and I traveled to Panama Canal to visit the area and to check out the Third Set of Locks Project.

The project includes new wider locks, deeper channels and a third lane and should be completed by 2015.

The Panama Canal is celebrating 100 years’ of operation this year.

The  Panama Port Authority predicts the new canal will increase commercial traffic each year doubling the tonnage by 2025.  The construction costs are over five billion dollars.

These are the construction photos that I took while touring the new canal construction.  Traveling through the Panama Canal is experience I highly recommended.  It was an amazing experience watching the boats and ships move through the different locks.  We noticed that some of the large ships barely had enough space to pass through the canal.

Inside the Third Panama CanalI’ve included two different perspectives of the Panama Canal construction.

When looking at the second photo, the new canal doesn’t look that deep until you notice how small the truck is compared to the sides.
